A better approach to polling is combining the select statement with a ticker from the time package. Handling Latency with Timeouts

Network calls and database queries are unpredictable and can occasionally hang indefinitely. Implementing timeouts is a defensive programming necessity that prevents a single slow dependency from exhausting your worker pool. Go provides the time.After function which returns a channel that receives a signal after a specified duration.

By including time.After in a select statement, you create a race between the actual work and a timer. If the work completes first, the timer is ignored; if the timer fires first, the goroutine can abort the operation and return an error. This pattern ensures that every external interaction has a strictly defined upper bound on its execution time.

Prioritizing Channel Operations

By default, the select statement in Go chooses a case at random if multiple channels are ready for communication. This uniform distribution prevents channel starvation but is problematic when some tasks are more urgent than others. For example, a system shutdown signal should always be handled before processing the next item in a work queue.

To implement priority, you can use a nested select pattern or a multi-stage check. You first check the high-priority channel in a non-blocking manner using a select with a default case. If that channel is empty, you proceed to a standard select that waits on both the high-priority and low-priority channels.

Implementing Priority Logic

A common real-world scenario is a worker that must process incoming requests while also listening for a stop signal. If you put both in a single select, the worker might process one more request even after the stop signal was sent. By checking the stop signal in its own select block first, you ensure the worker stops the moment it is requested.

This approach provides deterministic behavior in critical sections of your application. While it adds a few lines of code, the clarity and reliability it brings to the lifecycle of your goroutines are worth the overhead. It prevents race conditions during shutdown and ensures that high-priority users get the resources they need first.
